Two quick-fire goals cap off a miserable afternoon as Southport fall to defeat at home against King’s Lynn Town.

The visitors got the game underway and had large spells of possession in the opening 20 minutes. Tony McMillan made a smart reaction save following a long throw to keep the scores level after a quiet quarter of an hour.

On 21 minutes Danny Lloyd threatened the visitors net with a free kick that sailed just over the bar. Minutes later Marcus Carver almost broke the deadlock after latching on to a long-range effort from Sam Minihan, but couldn’t direct his effort goalwards.

The visitors attacking persistence got them their first goal after 33 minutes. A powerful long-range effort from Greg Taylor whistled over the head of McMillan and straight into the roof of the net. One goal then became two in an instant, as ex-Sandgrounder Josh Hmami curled a free kick into the top corner just three minutes later as the visitors went into the break 2-0 up.

The Sandgrounders began the second half the stronger of the two teams, but, for all their endeavour, couldn’t register a meaningful shot on target. Carver got in behind a resolute King’s Lynn defence five minutes after the restart but couldn’t beat the linesman’s flag and got caught offside.

Yellow cards littered the second period as time slipped away for Southport, weak efforts from range by David Morgan and Sonny Hilton were as close to the opposition’s net as the Soundgrounder’s got, as frustration grew amongst the fans.

A late cross by substitute Dior Angus was curled into a dangerous area, but smartly delt with by the King’s Lynn defence for the last action of the game.
