Broome Road resident stops JCB digger in its tracks
Contractors working for Sandway Homes turned up in Broome Road in Southport this morning. Broome Road is a quiet dead end with a huge area of land at the rear bordered by Bates Dairy, Christ the King School and Dobbies. The area is full of trees and wildlife.
The contractors told the residents who came out to see what was going on that they were doing a land survey to see if 200 houses could be built.
A large digger then started to rip away the shrubbery and trees. One lady who lives close by was incensed by this and ran onto the site and stood in front of the digger. The site manager told her they did not need planning permission to do the work just a licence. He also said there had been a letter drop to inform residents. When asked none of the residents present had received a letter.
The site manager said that as nesting season is now over, the Council had granted permission.
Eventually, the woman sat down and refused to move until the contractors left which they did after securing the digger. The woman then left the site as it was locked up.
The contractors vowed to return in the morning.
