Council Squabbling Demeans Sefton Politics, says Conservative Group Leader

Conservatives Urge End to Petty Political Squabbles
Cllr Mike Prendergast, Conservative Group Leader on Sefton Council, has called on all local councillors to stop the public mud-slinging over last month’s cancelled full council meeting and focus on delivering for residents and local businesses.
“It’s frankly demeaning and a bit embarrassing for councillors in Sefton to spend days sniping at each other in the local press and on social media over who said what concerning the abandonment of the last council meeting” said Cllr Prendergast.
“People in our borough expect better from their elected representatives, not an endless cycle of he said she said. Quite frankly, most people don’t care about who said what and to who and just want us all to do what we were elected to do.”
“They want us to fix roads and pavements, improve our town centres, deliver better local services, and keep council tax as low as possible – not waste time on petty squabbling. The level of interest in the general public for what local councillors think of one another is infinitesimally small, despite what some councillors might believe.”
Cllr Prendergast said there is merit in looking at ways to reschedule the meeting so that important business can still be discussed, even if not every councillor can attend.
“Residents deserve a council that gets on with the job and one which doesn’t have the democratic process stymied by a small group” he added. “If that means rescheduling so we can make decisions on vital local issues and scrutinise those making the decisions, then we should find a way to do it. Yes, people may be away but that shouldn’t mean the business of local government stops.”
“Residents and local businesses want us to deliver for them, and get on with the job of providing better services and amenities.”
