Two Sefton fires prompt warning over coast, parks and barbecues
Two fires in Sefton this week have prompted a warning about fire risks on the coast and in parks.
A fire tore through grass at North Park in Bootle on Monday, July 13. The following day, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended a fire in the Hightown dunes, which burned for more than two hours.
Both fires were brought under control before they could spread further. Dry conditions continue to increase the risk of fires across the UK, including on Sefton’s coastline.
Sefton’s dunes, beaches and nearby woodlands form a fragile habitat for species including natterjack toads, sand lizards and skylarks, as well as rare plants. Green Sefton says a fire can spread quickly through dry vegetation and cause lasting damage to wildlife and the landscape.
Barbecues and open fires are not allowed on Sefton’s coast under the Coastal and Visitor Areas Public Space Protection Order. The restriction covers beaches, dunes, grassed areas, woodlands, marshes, ponds, lakes, promenades, car parks and play areas. Fires and barbecues are also not permitted in Sefton’s parks.
Visitors are asked not to bring disposable barbecues or start fires, and to take all rubbish home. Cigarettes, broken glass and recently used barbecues can all create a fire risk. Used barbecues or cigarettes should not be placed in public bins, even if they appear to have been extinguished.
People using fire pits or barbecues at home should keep them well away from fences, sheds, gazebos and trees. Fires should be watched carefully, and rubbish, tyres, plastics, petrol and paraffin should never be used around them.
Anyone who sees an uncontrolled fire should call 999 and ask for the fire service, giving the nearest road or landmark. Anyone who sees someone starting a fire or barbecue in a coastal area or park can report it to Merseyside Police on 101. Green Sefton rangers, police officers or lifeguards can also be alerted.
