Witnesses sought after one-vehicle crash inside Queensway Tunnel

appeal

Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision inside the Queensway Tunnel.

We were contacted at just before 1.05pm yesterday, Tuesday 11 August, following reports of a one vehicle collision involving a Sur-ron bike on the Birkenhead to Liverpool carriageway.

The collision occurred approximately two thirds of the way through the tunnel towards the Liverpool end.

The rider of the bike, a man in his 20s from Liverpool, remains in hospital in a critical condition.

We are appealing for anyone who saw the bike entering the toll booth area at Birkenhead. We also know that there were a number of vehicles travelling in the opposite direction who would have seen the bike.

Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, the Lead Investigating Officer from the Merseyside Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “I would like to thank everyone for their patience as we dealt with the incident in the Queensway Tunnel yesterday. The tunnel was closed for a number of hours to allow us to carry out vital investigation work.

“The rider of the bike remains in a critical condition in hospital and our thoughts are with his family.

“We are currently speaking to witnesses and reviewing CCTV to establish what has taken place in the lead-up to the collision and I would ask anyone who saw the bike or witnessed the collision to contact us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police via social media at @MerPolCC, call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0151 777 5747, or email SCIU@merseyside.police.uk, quoting reference 26000654914.
