Former Liverpool Striker John Aldridge to Manage at Southport FC Charity Match

Southport FC are thrilled to announce that former Liverpool, Real Sociedad, and Tranmere Rovers striker John Aldridge will be managing at our upcoming charity match, which will be taking place on Sunday 3rd August, in support of 24 families directly affected by the tragic events of 29th July 2024.
John was a clinical striker, holding the sixth-highest goal record in the history of English football, with 329. He worked his way up the divisions in his younger years with Newport and Oxford, even playing at Haig Avenue for South Liverpool, before signing for Liverpool to replace the legendary Ian Rush. After over two successful seasons, in which John won both the league and FA Cup, scoring 50 goals, he joined Real Sociedad in 1989, breaking a selective recruitment policy that the club had fulfilled for decades.
After 2 seasons in The Basque Country, Aldridge returned to England to represent Tranmere Rovers, becoming player-manager in 1996 before retiring in 1998. During this spell he scored an impressive 138 goals in 243 games.
John joins an ever-growing list of celebrities and ex-footballers to appear at our charity match, already set to feature the likes of James Nelson-Joyce, Stillryan and Toni Duggan, alongside the confirmed attendance of Tony Bellew.
