Kings Lynn 3 Southport 2 - Match Report

It was predicted to be a tough ask and so it proved as Southport returned from the long trip to Norfolk with no points after a 3-2 defeat at King’s Lynn who registered their fifth straight win.

It was however a spirited performance from the lads and it was the home fans who were getting anxious in the closing stages.

Southport took the lead in the 17th minute when Connor Heath’s shot took a big deflection to give the home ‘keeper no chance. It was Connor’s first league goal for the club.

What looked like a blatant handball in the box and a chance to increase the lead was ignored by the referee and to compound the injustice a penalty was then awarded to the home side after a clumsy challenge.

Two minutes later and it was 2-1 to Lynn as they turned on the style in impressive fashion and it was the visitors who were glad to get in to the half time break at just 2-1 down. The first half did see Dylan Vassallo go close but the hosts had hit the post and bar.

Worse was to come in the 47th minute when the home side increased their lead after Tony McMillan spilled the ball from a throw in.

Just when you thought the floodgates might open Southport battled back and Tyler Walton finished well in the 68th minute and were playing some good football. Walton went close again and in added time Niall Watson was brought down on the edge of the area but nothing came of the free kick and the referee brought the game to an end.

Lynn are the best team we have played this season and it was easy to see why they are top but we more than matched them at times and could have got something out of the game and you could see at the end how disappointed the lads were after a hard afternoon’s work ended in defeat.
