Liberal Democrat's Annual Tree Campaign Fights Global Warming

As Spring approaches, Birkdale Liberal Democrat councillors made good yesterday on their promise to hand out young trees ( ”whips”) to residents keen find a place in their garden for a new tree. The  popular offer, advertised local residents this year featured silver birch, rowan and flowering cherry - all part of the campaign to ‘green’ Birkdale and fight global warming. 

“Planting a tree is one of the best things any individual can do to address the climate emergency, “ said organiser Cllr Iain Brodie-Browne, “ as well as a great way of beautifying a garden or street. Sadly Sefton Council has controversially cut a good number down this year so our annual campaign to get more trees is more important than ever.

What was gratifying this year was hearing from residents who had taken whips in previous years about the success of their plantings.”
 
Iain was assisted by Erin Harvey and Damian Bond in dealing with the stream of residents keen to plant a tree.

 Erin said, “ This initiative while being enjoyable to take part in is both practical and important. Trees not only make our town look great but they contribute greatly to our health and the health of the local environment. I’m proud of the Lib Dems for starting this project five years ago and the positive impact it is already having”.

There is no charge and all ‘whips’ come of course with a live root system.
