Local Legend Troy, The Retired Police Dog, Passes Away - Read His Amazing Story

Last week, we said our last goodbye to Retired Police Dog, Troy.
Troy was 19-months-old when he joined the force. He passed his General Purpose Dog initial course in March 2013, went on to train as a firearms support dog (FSD) in 2016, and finally hung up his harness when he retired in September 2018.

Troy's handler described him as both determined and enthusiastic, one of his stand out jobs being when officers stopped a vehicle containing a large amount of cannabis, two males ran off in different directions and disappeared into the night. When Troy arrived he picked up the scent of one of the males and tracked him for a considerable distance, locating him hiding in the bushes of a front garden. He then searched numerous alleyways & gardens for the second male & located him hiding behind bins. Both males were arrested, charged & given lengthy prison sentences. He thoroughly enjoyed each & every one of the results that he achieved alongside his handler in his 5 ½ year career.

Troy was a mentor to several budding police puppies and helped them learn the ways of the world and how to behave. When he was 12 years old, 8-week-old German Shepherd puppy, Jeff, arrived & Troy didn't hesitate to take him under his wing. Jeff looked up to Troy all through his formative months & we hope that he remembers the wisdom & knowledge Troy has passed to him as Jeff begins his initial GPD course in January 2025.

Chicken and bacon were firm favourites of Troy's & whilst he would let you believe he was going deaf as he got older, he had a knack for knowing exactly when the fridge door was opening!
In his retirement he loved to socialise with his dog family, play mischievously with his toys and search for rocks to carry around. Troy loved & was loved by all of his neighbours & would survey the street at the beginning of every walk to try & find new people to scuttle up to for cuddles!

Troy faced a few health problems towards the end of his life, & thanks to Merseyside Retired Benevolent Fund who provided financial support for Troy's expensive surgeries, he was able to enjoy retirement for a little longer.
Thank you Troy for your service, stand down now boy
