O'Neill's Fifth Minute Goal Books Victory for Southport at Buxton
Southport returned from Derbyshire with all three points after a 5th minute Mikey O’Neill goal was enough to secure the victory.
It was a hard earned point with backs to the wall defending at times particularly in the second half but as we have seen on several occasions of late the lads are prepared to dig in and they did that today.
It could have been a lot more comfortable had Declan Evans converted from the penalty spot in the 49th minute but he sliced his shot wide.
Mikey’s goal was a 25 yard strike that went in off the post and will no doubt be featuring in the end of season Goal Of The Season contenders. He almost repeated the feat in the 24th minute but Dearnley on the home goal pulled off a fine save to deny him a second.
Buxton created a few chances but the defence held firm. They had a strong shout for a penalty late on but the referee, who was well placed, thankfully waved play on.
Not the prettiest of games on a bitterly cold afternoon but a win away, on a plastic pitch is always welcome and the large travelling contingent went home happy after great support on the road once again.
