Oxford City 1 Southport 2
Southport won their first game away from home in the league this season at Oxford City, a win that has been coming and long overdue.
The game started off slowly with Southport dominating possession and creating a few half chances through a couple of efforts that went wide of the mark from Adrien Thibaut.
Just before the stroke of half time, Thibaut the striker on loan from Crewe, out muscled Oxford defender Darnell Johnson ran through on goal and slotted the ball into the near post for his first Southport goal.
The Sandgrounders started the second half brightly and in the 49th minute secured a well deserved 2-0 lead through number 9 Jordan Slew.
The goal came through a header knocked down from the man who returned from loan earlier this week Aaron Pickles and Slew rocketed the ball on the half volley into the back of the net.
Oxford came close in the 63rd minute when they hit the crossbar from a free kick on the edge of the box. They eventually pulled one back in the 81st minute after Josh Parked tapped the ball in from close range thanks to a cut back from DJ Campton-Sturridge.
The substitutes for Southport looked bright when they came on as Danny Lloyd had an effort that was well saved that was heading into the bottom right corner.
It was also fantastic to see Dan Pike come off the bench as he returned from injury playing his first minutes since the opening day away at Merthyr Town.
We return to action at home against Chorley on Tuesday and Neil Danns’ side will look to achieve back to back wins in the league for the first time this season.
