Planning permission given to install 4 gates and security cameras on Southport Pier
Planning permission has been given to install 4 gates and security cameras on the closed Southport Pier.
The new gates will be located on the steps close to the halfway house. The numbered items are security cameras.
This application seeks consent for the installation of additional security measures along the length of the pier (comprising monitors, sensors, cameras) as well as additional gates of a form to match those already in place on the pier.
The security measures, by themselves, are modest in size and fixture while the additional gates are of a form already seen to parts of the pier.
The Council's conservation officers note that the proposal represents pre-emptive adaptations to safeguard the significance of the pier from the effects anti-social behaviour in the future. They agree that the proposals are the minimum necessary to achieve the stated goals and that in being implemented they would provide public benefits by ensuring the significance of the pier is protected from vandalism and damage.
"The introduction of new security camera system and gates will improve the safety of the Pier and its surrounding, as required by insurers and will potentially attracting more visitors. The proposal is fully sustainable in respect of function and usage of Southport Pier."
In view of this it is considered that the proposal is acceptable and should be granted consent.
