Sefton Council Invests Hundreds of Thousands in Annual Southport Air Show
Hundreds of thousands of pounds is spent each year by Sefton Council in order to put on the Southport Air Show, which last year welcomed more than 40,000 visitors to the resort.
Tickets for the 2023 Southport Air Show are still available, with the weather forecast looking sunny families are encouraged to buy tickets (under 16s free) to support The Air Show.
The brainchild of Sefton Council, the annual Air Show has wowed crowds for more than thirty years and is now synonymous with the resort and a major factor in the success of the Borough’s visitor economy.
On average the Local Authority spends £400,000 per year to ensure the Southport Air Show can take place.
A portion of these costs are covered by income generated by ticket pricing for the show, however the show is subsidised by the Local Authority due to the event’s importance to the local economy.
In 2022 over 40,000 tickets were sold for the two day display and the total revenue generated totalled £360,000.
Thousands of visitors make journeys from across the UK to see the Southport Air Show, generating much needed income for the town’s hospitality sector.
A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: “Our expert Tourism team work incredibly hard to ensure the Borough is rich with events and entertainment for tens of thousands of visitors each year.
“We are expecting another bumper crowd this coming weekend and encourage everyone to arrive early to experience the full air show experience with a huge amount of on ground activity.
“The tourism sector is vital to Sefton’s economy and in 2021, over £430 million was generated by the tourism sector.
“One of the many large scale annual events that Sefton Council provides is the Southport Air Show, which is widely regarded as one of the biggest and cheapest ticketed aerial display weekends in the UK.
“Unlike other displays, the unique Southport Air Show takes place over the resort’s beach and supplies dedicated on site car parking, extended facilities and a wealth of additional ground-level entertainment for just £10.75 with under 16’s free.
“Like the vast majority of major Air Shows, entry to the event is ticket only. However prices are considerably cheaper than other displays elsewhere in the UK.”
