Sefton Renews Dog Control PSPO for Safer Public Spaces

Attention Sefton residents  
Sefton Council are keeping their current Dog Control – Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for a further three years to help keep dog bite incidents down.
We’re supporting this initiative and will be sharing messages on our socials throughout May to explain what all this means!


PSPOs provide the Council with enforcement powers to address irresponsible dog control and protect the public. Some of the things that all dog owners and walkers will need to be aware of are the Order:


  • - Restricts the number of dogs that can be walked by one person to a maximum of six dogs on or off the lead.
    - Prohibits dogs from entering enclosed playgrounds and fenced sports pitches, including multi use game sport facilities.
    - Prohibits dogs from entering marked sports pitches during specified times.
    - Requires dogs to be kept on a lead within defined picnic sites and family areas in parks.
    - Requires dogs to be kept on a lead within all designated carriageways (A and B classified Road) and footways.
    - Requires dogs to be kept on a lead within all cemeteries and crematoria.
    - Requires dogs to be placed on a lead when directed by an authorised officer to prevent a nuisance or behaviour by the dog likely to cause annoyance or disturbance to members of the public.
    - States that dog leads must be no greater than 2 metres in length when used in the public spaces.

  • The PSPO applies to all publicly accessible land in the borough, so the Council is urging Sefton’s dog owners to understand the rules before they take their dog out for a walk  
    Anyone found to be breaching the PSPO can be fined by council enforcement officers so that’s why we’re using social media to educate and advise people that every park and beach in Sefton is covered by this legislation.
    We want everyone to be able to enjoy Sefton’s public spaces safely without being affected by a minority of irresponsible dog owners
