Five from six as Southport come from behind to beat Alfreton

Southport made it five wins from six on Tuesday night as Alfreton Town visited Haig Avenue, climbing to 15th in the table in the process.

Despite dominating the chances before the break, the hosts found themselves behind at half-time. After 15 minutes, a high ball into the box from the typically industrious visitors dropped kindly for Lewis Salmon, who finished past Chris Renshaw.

Southport responded strongly and created a stream of opportunities, with eight clear openings in the half. Charlie Cooper, however, was in inspired form in the Alfreton goal, producing a number of excellent saves to preserve his side’s lead.

Parity arrived just two minutes after the restart, Arthur Gnahoua bringing Southport level. Cutting inside onto his left foot, his strike proved too powerful for the goalkeeper to keep out as it nestled into the bottom corner.

The decisive moment came 11 minutes from time, with three substitutes combining. A driving run from Danny Lloyd opened things up before he fed Hallam Hope, celebrating his birthday, who in turn laid the ball into the path of Malakai McKenzie. The winger did the rest, curling a superb left-footed finish into the top corner for what is fast becoming his trademark.

It was not a complete performance by any means, but it was enough, and what they failed to do on Saturday against a physical side, they handled much better here.
