Southport Conservatives- Reform Peddling Crackpot Conspiracies

Southport Conservatives have strongly backed comments by the Leader of the Opposition and Conservative Leader, Kemi Badenoch, who described comments by Nigel Farage on alleged links between autism and paracetamol as “irresponsible conspiracy-theory nonsense.”

The recent comments follow on from the Reform Party conference where Aseem Malhotra spoke and linked Covid vaccines to the King’s and Princess of Wales’ cancers.

Mike Prendergast, Spokesperson for Southport Conservatives said, “Nigel Farage’s refusal to distance himself from the utter nonsense that paracetamol can cause autism is frankly shameful.”

“All this does is cause needless worry and anxiety. Sadly, many people will believe this and some pregnant women will go through treatable pain because they’re worried about taking paracetamol during pregnancy.”

Earlier in the month, Reform UK allowed totally unsubstantiated claims about vaccines to be made at their conference which drew criticism from across the political spectrum.

Commenting, Mike Prendergast said, “Vaccines save lives, it’s as simple as that.“

“Thanks to a world leading vaccine roll out, the UK was one of the first countries to emerge from Covid. Vaccines protect children, the elderly and have stopped in their tracks many diseases that used to claim thousands of lives every year.”

“Locally in the North West we are seeing ever increasing numbers of diseases like measles because of scaremongering about vaccines.”

“Doctors, nurses and carers in Southport went above and beyond to save lives during the pandemic and serve our community everyday. To see Reform UK now undermining vaccines and trust in science is disgraceful.”

“Reform UK in Southport need to make it clear that they don’t support spreading misinformation on such important issues like public health. They can’t sit on the fence on this one, do they stand with science and common sense or with crackpot conspiracy theorists.”

Mike Prendergast concluded by saying, “If Reform UK in Southport can’t be trusted to say something as simple as paracetamol doesn’t cause autism and vaccines do work, how can they be trusted with anything?”
