Southport Councillor happy to see Midget Gems renamed Mini Gems by M&S

Southport Councillor Sir Ron Watson is happy to see that M and S are to rename Midget Gems to Mini Gems because people with Dwarfism might be offended by the name of the popular sweets.

Sir Ron said... “I know that many people have expressed concern over what has been commonly referred to as the ‘woke’ agenda but this should not detract from the fact that, from time to time, there are issues raised that really do require action.

“The particular issue in this instance relates to dwarfism which I understand in most cases is a medically inherited condition. This in turn does raise a range of practical issues for those members of our community who have the condition but there is also the issue of perception.

“I am very pleased that Marks & Spencer have taken the lead and changed the name of the sweet to ‘Mini’. It is very obvious that it is the same product and people can still enjoy it whilst, at the same time, clearly indicating that they appreciate the potential upset that can be caused by the name in its traditional form.

“I hope everyone will support the change that should be introduced by all manufacturers.”
