Southport Lib Dems Call for Halt on 'Sefton Chainsaw Massacre'

Southport Liberal Democrats say “stop The Sefton Chainsaw Massacre!” as 41% more trees due to be felled this year

This Halloween, Southport Liberal Democrats are calling on Sefton Council to develop a proper plan to make sure that all trees cut down are replaced, as figures show that the Council are planning to fell 41% more street trees this year than they did last year. 

The council are in the process of applying for external funding streams to replace the trees that are due to be felled this year but do not currently have the money, or any guarantee of it, in place.

The Lib Dems have launched a survey to get views from local residents about their street trees. They are calling on the Council to not only make sure there is a strategy for replacement but also to make sure that our trees are properly maintained.

Lib Dem Kew ward campaigner, Daniel Lewis said “The Council have declared a climate emergency. Trees play a big role in our ecosystem and so they should be a priority.

“Of course it’s important that trees that are dying or could pose a health and safety risk are removed, but it’s worrying that the Council doesn’t yet have a strategy for replacement when there has been such an increase in the number of trees being cut down.
