Southport Lifeboat rescue 3 people from the incoming tide

rescue

Our assistance was requested by the RNLI lifeguards via Holyhead Coastguard after three individuals and their dog had become cut-off by the tide on Southport Beach.

The quads entered the beach at Southport and identified the group approximately 1 mile from the sea wall. After making contact, they escorted the group back across the channel that had cut them off. With help from the lifeguards, the group was taken back to the boathouse to warm up, where safety advice was offered.

Southport Beach has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world. What does this mean? Tidal range is the difference in height between high tide and low tide. As the tide rises, a large area of beach that was once uncovered becomes covered.

The tide does not simply rise straight up the beach; instead, it may fill channels and gullies first. These channels and gullies may be behind you, leaving raised sandbanks exposed. Before you know it, the tide has surrounded the bank and cut you off.

That’s why we advise all beach-goers to check the tide times before they head to the beach.
