Morecambe end Southport’s FA Cup run with 2-0 win
Southport’s FA Cup run ended with a 2-0 defeat by Morecambe at the Halo Aerospace Stadium on Saturday, September 19.
The Sandgrounders improved on their poor display at Worksop Town the previous weekend, but could not find a way past Morecambe goalkeeper Myles Boney. Boney was named man of the match after making several important saves to keep the home side in the game.
Morecambe took the lead in the 58th minute when Paul Lewis finished for the hosts. Former Southport player Isaac Buckley-Ricketts added a second in stoppage time to settle the tie.
Morecambe had arguably produced a better performance when they lost 2-1 at Haig Avenue ten days earlier, but Southport were unable to repeat that result. The defeat also extended their run without an away goal.
New signing Rhys Healey made his debut, coming on for the final 20 minutes and impressing in attack.
Southport now turn to a Lancashire Challenge Trophy tie away to Garstang on Wednesday, September 23, before returning to league action at home to Spennymoor Town on Saturday, September 26.
Southport: Lukjanciks, Pike (Davies 60), Dwyer (Healey 75), Lavelle, Jameson, L Griffiths, Slew (Solomon 70), R Griffiths, Ogwuru (Moseley 54), Minihan, Williams (McKenzie 60).
Unused substitutes: Lloyd, Edwards.
The attendance was 2,047, including 343 Southport supporters.
