Southport began their 2026-27 National League North campaign with a 3-1 defeat away to newly promoted Hebburn Town on Saturday, August 8.

Hebburn took an early lead when Matty Cornish converted a close-range cut-back. The hosts doubled their advantage shortly before half-time, with Jake Charles finding space in the penalty area before sending a left-footed half-volley into the bottom corner.

Southport made two changes at the break, with Kyle Jameson and Sol Solomon replaced by Harry Perritt and club captain Danny Lloyd.

The Sandgrounders pulled a goal back in the 61st minute through new striker Daniel Ogwuru, who scored on his debut. Jordan Slew’s shot was deflected high into the air inside the penalty area, allowing Ogwuru to head the ball over the goalkeeper.

Southport created further opportunities from set pieces and saw sharp wing play from second-half substitute Christy Edwards, but could not find an equaliser.

Hebburn secured the points in the 89th minute when Hartlepool loanee Josh Donaldson scored to complete the home side’s opening-day victory.

Southport’s first home fixture of the season is against Buxton at Haig Avenue on Saturday, August 15, with kick-off at 3pm. They then travel to another newly promoted side, Hednesford Town, on Tuesday, August 18.
