Marine Drive closure causes long queues ahead of Southport Air Show

A closure on Marine Drive caused long queues in Southport on the morning of Wednesday, 26 August, ahead of this weekend’s air show.

Traffic was reported backing up across Marine Way Bridge, past KFC and along the Promenade by the Royal Clifton Hotel. Some drivers turned around after reaching the closure, adding to congestion in the area.

The affected section runs between Southport Pier and Adventure Coast. Diversions are in operation along the Promenade.

Marine Drive is expected to remain closed until Monday, 31 August. Drivers are advised to follow diversion signs rather than relying solely on satellite navigation.

The Southport Air Show takes place on Saturday, 29 August, and Sunday, 30 August 2026, with flying displays above the seafront. Gates are due to open at 10am, with displays scheduled to run approximately from midday until 5pm.
