Rail passengers urged to check luggage rules before summer travel
Millions of passenger journeys are expected across the rail network this summer
From wheelie bins to shopping trolleys and everything in between, oversized or excessive luggage can slow boarding, block aisles and contribute to delays
Passengers are encouraged to check luggage guidelines with their train operator and plan ahead before travelling
With millions of journeys expected this summer for holidays, festivals and major events, the rail industry is encouraging passengers to “think before you pack” ahead of one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Train travel offers passengers far more flexibility when it comes to luggage than flying, but excessively large or bulky items can create problems on board. They can block aisles, take up valuable space and slow boarding, affecting comfort and convenience for everyone.
And it’s not just big suitcases causing issues, with train operators and Network Rail sharing shocking stories of people bringing along wheelie bins, shopping trolleys, fridges, bathtubs, bookshelves, washing machines, wheelbarrows and even pianos on their journeys.
Malcolm Pitt, Network Rail’s Head of Customer Experience & Accessibility, said:“These unusual items can sometimes raise a smile, but they can also create real challenges for passengers – making it harder to get on and off trains, move through carriages, and in some cases causing delays.
“Rail is a convenient way to travel with the luggage you need for your journey, especially when compared with other forms of travel like air, but we're asking passengers to think ahead and bring items that can be carried safely and stored appropriately on board.
“We want everyone to have a safe, smooth and comfortable journey. Planning ahead and travelling with the right amount and type of luggage helps keep services running safely, on time and makes journeys easier for everyone.”
Passengers are reminded that theNational Rail luggage guidelinesset out clear expectations, including that items must be packed securely and light enough to carry with ease and not cause inconvenience to others.
Jason Webb, CEO Office Director at Rail Delivery Group, said:“Every year, our colleagues across the railway come across some surprising items on the network, which is why National Rail's list of prohibited items includes canoes, hang-gliders and large furniture.
"With school holidays, music festivals and warm weather, there are lots of good reasons to take the train this summer, but with lots of people travelling it’s important to only bring luggage that is comfortable to carry.
"Large items blocking doors and aisles can hinder boarding and exiting, especially for those needing assistance, such as wheelchair users. They can also prevent trains from departing on time, causing knock-on delays across other services. We encourage passengers to use designated storage areas where available and keep doors clear at all times, helping everyone enjoy a smoother journey this summer.”
Customers who are older, disabled or with reduced mobility and need help with their luggage, can also request Passenger Assist services before they travel. They can book two hours before their journey through the Passenger Assistance app or website, contact their train company, or alternatively ask staff for help when they arrive at the station if luggage is within their train operator’s guidelines.
Rail operators and Network Rail encourage passengers to check travel advice before setting off and plan journeys to help make their trips as safe and smooth as possible.

National Rail research found that 43% of festival-goers travelling to events this summer plan to travel by train (amongst 2,000 British adults who self-identified as ‘music fans’ between 2 to 6 July 2026).
