Rail passengers travelling through the North West have been urged to plan ahead as Creamfields, Manchester Pride and two Premier League matches are expected to bring large crowds to the region this bank holiday weekend.

Creamfields returns to Daresbury, Cheshire, from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 August. Manchester Pride will run from Friday 28 to Monday 31 August, with events taking place across Manchester city centre.

Football supporters will also be travelling to Liverpool and Manchester. Liverpool will host Nottingham Forest at Anfield at 12.30pm on Saturday 29 August, while Manchester United will play Ipswich Town at Old Trafford at 4.30pm on Sunday 30 August.

Network Rail expects Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street to be particularly busy, with tens of thousands of people travelling from across the country. Extra staff will be available at stations to provide advice and help keep passengers safe. Thousands will also be travelling to Southport Air Show at the weekend.

Passengers are being advised to:

  • Plan their journey and check before travelling through National Rail Enquiries.

  • Check the times of their last trains home, as some services are expected to be very busy.

  • Respect station staff and fellow passengers.

Chris Wright, Network Rail’s North West route director, said:

“It's great to see the North West hosting so many huge events over the bank holiday weekend and we want everyone travelling by train to have the best possible journeys.

“To make your journeys as smooth and easy as possible, I'm urging travellers to following our key travel tips - plan your journey, know the time of your last train home and please respect our station staff. We will have additional staff in place to provide advice and keep people safe throughout the weekend.”

Passengers should check National Rail Enquiries for the latest train times before setting off.
