Trust Medical Director joins local leaders in Southport walkabout
The Trust’s Medical Director, Dr Peter Williams, joined key community leaders on a walkabout in Southport in response to this week’s tragic events.
Dr Williams joined senior figures including Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy; Mayor of the Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram; Sefton Council Leader Marian Atkinson and Acting Chief Executive Andrea Watts; Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service Chief Fire Officer Phil Garrigan; Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell and Southport MP Patrick Hurley to meet members of the public at the scene of Tuesday’s disturbances.
He said: “It was important we showed solidarity with our local community while recognising the commitment and professionalism of colleagues from across the NHS and all the emergency services who responded.
"Our staff at Southport and Ormskirk hospitals were among the first to provide support when these awful events began to unfold, caring for patients and their families with the kindness and compassion that I see in their work every day.’’
He added: "I was very moved to stand alongside colleagues at the vigil in Southport on Tuesday night and it was hard to believe the shocking scenes that followed such an emotional and heartfelt show of community support.
“Once again though our staff at Southport Hospital responded with remarkable professionalism. It has been an extremely challenging time for all those who work at and I am incredibly proud to be a part of the team.”
