World Cup Tied to Increase in Domestic Abuse - Sefton Council Offers Support

With the football World Cup well underway and England’s next match tonight, Sefton Council is reminding local people affected by domestic abuse they can find advice and support atwww.sefton.gov.uk/domestic-abuse.

Football isn’t an excuse for abusive behaviour,  but we know incidents of domestic abuse have been shown to rise dramatically during major tournaments. Research by Lancaster University found there were substantial increases in reported abuse linked to England matches. Reported domestic abuse incidents rose by 26% increase when England won or drew, and a 38% increase when England lost.

Cllr Liz Dowd, Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnership Engagement, said: 
“Sadly, while many of us will enjoying the World Cup, and supporting the England team there will be some people in Sefton who are dreading it and fearing what may happen whatever the outcome.

“On our website atwww.sefton.gov.uk/domestic-abusethere is lots of advice and links to where people experiencing or fearing abuse can find support, whatever their nationality or team. Or people can call the Sefton Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0151 394 1400.

There is also information for people who know someone they suspect may be experiencing domestic abuse atwww.sefton.gov.uk/domestic-abuse. This includes details of the signs to look out for and ways to provide support.  

Cllr Dowd added:
“Abusers can be very controlling and coercive making leaving or even disclosing an abusive relationship very hard. That’s why it’s important that if you suspect someone is being abused, you support them but do so carefully.

“Giveaway signs might include the person making excuses for their abuser’s behaviour, nervousness and a reluctance to talking openly when their abuser is around.

But if you get the chance, encourage them to speak to you or a professional about what is going on.”

“However, in an emergency situation always contact the police by calling 999.”
